    Dusty

I’ve just been up in my loft (attic, to you North Americans). One day Sarah and I hope to turn it into a master bedroom suite, but that’s just a pipe dream right now.

We are, however, looking at ways to improve access to the loft so we can at least use it for storage. At the moment we have a tiny hatch in the bathroom that is, not only hard to get through, but it’s in the cornerĀ of the house so there’s zero headroom when you get up there.

We have a cupboard at the top of our stairs that, we thought, might turn into a staircase rather nicely. The only way to know for sure was to climb up and have a look!

So that’s what Sarah and I did tonight, after the girls were asleep we got the ladder out and squeezed our way through the hatch and into the loft, trying not to step through the ceiling as we climbed from joist to joist.

There’s actually surprisingly little space, considering the size of the house below. I worked out that we would get one decent size room, but would be struggling for a bathroom too. But as I said, that’s getting way ahead of ourselves, back to the issue of access. Unfortunately the hot water system is right where I was hoping a staircase could go, I have no idea how hard that is to move. Also, I’m not sure it would be possible to have a staircase where I was hoping because of the roof height.

What did I learn? That I don’t know what I’m doing and need to ask someone who does!

What did I get for my efforts? Very, very, very dusty!
